The Somers Wrestling Program started in 1959 by Ed Urban, a physical education teacher in the Somers School District.  Urban coached the team for ten years until the 1967-68 wrestling season.  During the 1968-69 wrestling season the team was taken over by Rich Gnida,a physical education teacher in the Somers School District.  Gnida coached the Tuskers for 16 years. He developed Somers Wrestling into a powerhouse throughout Section One. During the Gnida years, Somers won 147 dual meet victories and seven league titles. Four Somers wrestling won Section One Championships.  In 1974 Gnida was named Section One Coach of the Year.  Gnida stepped down in 1984. In 1987, Gnida was inducted into the Section One Wrestling Hall of Fame.  During the 1984-85 wrestling season, one of Gnida’s former wrestlers, Dennis DiSanto, took over the program.  DiSanto guided the Tuskers for 27 years and continued the winning tradition at Somers.  During the DiSanto years, Somers won 295 dual meets, seven league championships, had three undefeated teams including a 34 match win streak, won four Class B Section One Titles, has 18 individual Section One Champions, four New York State finalist and two NYS champions.  He was named Section One Coach of the Year in 2001.
